  • Meanwhile... contractors continue preparing site for Eglinton Crosstown tunnel-boring machines

    15 May 2012 | 4:54 pm
Since starting work last fall, Metrolinx and TTC contractors for the Eglinton - Scarborough Crosstown light rail transit line have been busy. Work is rapidly progressing on the first tunnel launch shaft for the Crosstown at Keelesdale Park, near Black Creek Drive. Late this summer (or early this fall), two tunnel-boring machines will arrive at the site. The supplier will deliver the machines in multiple parts and the contractors will use cranes to lower them into the shaft, where they’ll assemble them. Once they’ve put the machines together, they’ll start tunneling at a rate…

    Julie Baldassi
    15 May 2012 | 12:47 pm
In an ongoing series for Spacing, Toronto-based writer Julie Baldassi delves into Hamilton's built heritage conversation, its key players, and important buildings. Some buildings have been salvaged, but many barely stand, crumbled beyond the point of repair, with their broken windows and unkempt facades noticeably sticking out. Increasingly, the debates over the future of Hamilton's heritage buildings have come to represent a changing landscape of political interests. Much like other post-industrial cities in the American Rust Belt, Hamilton has been traversing a period of revitalization in…

Last Thursday, former Toronto mayor David Miller, singer Jully Black, TIFF CEO Piers Handling and others showed up at the Winter Garden Theatre to offer their collected wisdom at Stuart Knight’s second annual Top Ten Event in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Marcia is up first for judging, and every single judge says exactly the same thing: she’s a great makeup artist, but her two looks do not dazzle. Why on earth does this take five minutes to report? And why couldn’t each judge say something constructive? We don’t see Marcia rolling her eyes, but as soon as Lisa Tant takes her turn to offer her own…

(Image: screenshot from Google Maps) Google Maps finally rolled out its upgraded traffic features to Toronto earlier this spring, which means those cruising across the city in cars can see estimates of how long their journeys will take based on current traffic conditions. How does it work? Turns out all those drivers using Google Maps on their phones (with the GPS enabled) are automatically sending anonymous data back to Google showing how fast they’re moving. Compiling that data from thousands of users, the company gets an idea of live traffic conditions. When you search for directions,…

With the rise of nouveau speakeasies like the Toronto Temperance Society and SpiritHouse, there’s been an increased interest in some of the classic cocktails previously lost in the mists of time (witness SpiritHouse’s 11-page drink list, broken down by historical epoch). But what if some of those old cocktails deserve to be forgotten? Over on the New York Times’s Dining Journal, Robert Simpson recapped a panel at last weekend’s Manhattan Cocktail Classic in which prominent mixological types weighed in on that very question. The Brooklyn? “Not a good drink.” The Aviation? “Tastes…

Local rapper crafts a touching tribute to a fallen hip-hop legend. More than almost any other genre, hip-hop has traditionally been averse to anything that resembles a cover. Sampling another rapper’s voice is fine, but borrowing someone else’s bars is kind of unacceptable. Thankfully, local rapper D-Sisive has never been huge on “traditional.” His new release, “Adam,” isn’t actually a cover per se. Instead, it’s an eight-minute magnum-opus tribute to late Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch, whom D-Sisive cites as a major influence. Consisting of a medley of…

Summer music festivals in Toronto are as plentiful as they are varied — not a bad combination. From jazz to reggae to indie rock, there's fest for pretty much all musical tastes (so long as you're not talking about the seapunk crowd). Although V-Fest is a thing of the past in Toronto, Ink's new Veld Music Fest sounds promising (if not quite the same scale of event), and that's to say nothing of the strong line-up at NXNE and the first New Traditions Festival, which is set to ensure that the Island continues to be a destination for summer music. Proceeds for this event went to the Stephen Lewis foundation. Speakers were prominent Canadians who took the path less taken, from Hana Gartner to Jully Black to David Miller. Or not. See you in the morning. Q: Hey Doug: Being of a certain vintage myself, I was wondering about your opinion on two related topics: What did we have/do in our youth that today's youth doesn't have/do? And what do they have/do that you'd wish we'd been able to have/do? Thanks for all the work that you. I am sure other writers at the Star feel…

You know what has to be one of the toughest jobs in sports? Being Kobe Bryant’s teammate. Here you’ve got a guy with off-the-charts talent and a desire to win that borders on the pathological; a fellow who demands more excellence and effort from his teammates that perhaps they are capable of giving and someone who is quite willing to – as the saying goes these days – throw them under the bus. And he’s at it again. While you were sleeping – and while I was sleeping a bit if truth be told – a flu-ridden Bryant teed off on his teammates, without naming names, of course, in the wake…

  • Griffin: Brett Lawrie likely to be suspended for striking an umpire

    Richard Griffin
    15 May 2012 | 10:31 pm
Brett Lawrie is an emotional player. That's what makes him a Blue Jays crowd favourite. He competes hard and wears his heart on his sleeve. But there are some rules about the privilege of playing major-league baseball and, in fact, any professional sport, that contact with an umpire or official is strictly forbidden and punishable by fines and suspension. So in the ninth inning of Tuesday 4-3 loss to the Rays, with the Jays down by a run, Lawrie was trying his best to compete and get on base against the Rays' hard-throwing closer Fernando Rodney. The Langley, B.C. native worked the…

The sleazy and ultimately disappointing Roger Clemens perjury case is in full swing in Washington D.C. The star witness for the prosecution, former Jays strength and conditioning coach Brian McNamee is suggesting that he first administered steroids to the Rocket in his SkyDome Hotel apartment back in '98. Clemens won consecutive Cy Youngs with the Jays and earned consecutive pitching Triple Crowns -- wins, strikeouts and ERA in both '97 and '98. The case seems weak. There are no other witnesses than McNamee, the former New York City cop, to say that they saw Clemens actually take…

OAKLAND-Following serious struggles at cleanup, with three homers, 13 RBIs and a .624 overall OPS, and at the back-end of the bullpen with seven blown saves in 11 opportunites Blue Jays' manager John Farrell felt the moment had arrived for changes. The changes came on Wednesday morning as the club continued to struggle through a disappointing 10-game road trip, having lost three in a row after taking the first two vs. the Angels. Farrell indicated that Casey Janssen is the new closer and that Adam Lind is now the eighth place hitter -- when he is in the lineup. Edwin Encarnacion will he…

    9 May 2012 | 1:34 am
OAKLAND-The Jays can't seem to help but make every game an adventure. After leading twice on Tuesday, including a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth, the Jays handed the ball to closer Francisco Cordero in search of his third save. Instead, a leadoff double by Michael Taylor and a one-out single through a drawn-in infield by Cliff Pennington and the Jays' pen had blown its seventh save in 11 opportunities, with Cordero blowing each of his last three chances. It seems it's all BS all the time. Then came a stolen base, an intentional walk, a passed ball, another intentional…

    6 May 2012 | 12:14 am
ANAHEIM-All of the magic, all the superb Blue Jays' defence of the first two nights that had carried the team to back-to-back shutouts at the Big A disappeared on Saturday in a sloppy 6-2 loss against an Angels lineup that was minus Albert Pujols for the first time this year. The Angels' three-run sixth inning was a microcosm of what ailed the Jays on this night as they tried for a fifth straight win on a beautiful southern California night. Perhaps Kyle Drabek, with his 87 pitches through five innings shouldn't even have gone back out for the sixth. He hadn't commanded the…

In April 2008, three publishers, Cambridge University Press, SAGE Publications, and Oxford University Press, filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Georgia State University, alleging that GSU infringed their copyrights by allowing professors to upload excerpts from books onto the university’s electronic reserve system (ERes). The complaint alleged “systematic, widespread, and unauthorized copying and distribution of a vast amount of copyrighted works”, and argued that GSU “has facilitated, enabled, encouraged, and…

This commentary was first published by Prof. Ed Morgan in The Globe and Mail on May 9, 2012. A public school in Toronto thinks a clergyman can be invited to conduct Islamic prayers at lunchtime on school grounds. As a school trustee explains it, “What we’re doing is what we should be doing as a school board and that is accommodating students’ needs no matter what their religion is.” A public school in Chester Basin, N.S., thinks a student can be prohibited from wearing a T-shirt with a Christian message on school grounds. As school trustees explain it, “It is expected that students…

This commentary was first published in the Financial Post on April 28, 2012. The collapse of Magna’s dual-class share structure in 2011 via an insider bid for Frank Stronach’s holdings raised eyebrows because of the unprecedented pay out of an 1,800% premium that Mr. Stronach (through a private holding company) received in the transaction. Dual-class structures are once again in the spotlight with the recent proposal by Telus to eliminate its dual class structure. It was clear that Magna concerned securities regulators at least from a disclosure standpoint. By contrast, regulators have…

This article by Prof. Ed Morgan was originally published in The Lawyers Weekly, April 13, 2012. When it comes to conducting foreign affairs, it is well established that the constitution puts the weight of responsibility on the federal government. But in recent years, the courts have deviated from that rule as often as they have invoked it. In the Afghan prisoners case, the Federal Court of Canada explained that the government owes no constitutional duty when, after questioning, the military turns detainees over to a foreign government. The judgment presumed that Canadian forces require…

If you are inspired by this bathroom..you can have the vanity below... This vanity from…
  • NYC’s New Home Market is a Great Case Study for Toronto’s

    13 May 2012 | 9:58 am
We often say ‘timing’ is everything when it comes to the new home industry and the current situation in NYC clearly demonstrates that. According to the New York Times, lack of inventory in the new home industry in NYC has somewhat put a stop to negotiations between buyers and developers. Much like the current situation in Toronto, New York City buyers used to negotiate items like the price of their new condos, closing costs such as taxes and legal fees, storage space etc. A combination of few new listings (drop of 21.5% from two years ago), and high demand (increase of 13.6% in…

  • Byron Sonne’s verdict expected today

    15 May 2012 | 12:32 pm
The media seems hell bent on demonizing this guy by continually calling him an activist, referring to “explosive chemicals” (hair bleach, for example — all perfectly legal), “weapons” (a potato shooter), and really the only charge this is all based on, “inciting mischief not committed” (openly discussing about how the G20 security fence might be breached — but not actually doing it or planning to do it). To anyone paying attention, it’s obvious that the cops are trying to intimidate him, and in effect you, from even thinking the wrong…

Just a short blurb from my other blog; straight from Ontario’s green fields to your dinner table! Doesn’t matter that most experts believe that pesticides are not the ideal solution. Doesn’t matter that most weed varieties are not “Roundup” (a Monsanto pesticide) glyphosate-resistant – a chemical which, according to Health Canada “is acutely toxic to rats via the oral or dermal route at doses as low as 3800 mg/kg”. Doesn’t matter that researchers are already discovering 2,4-D resistant weeds growing in fields. Doesn’t matter that 2,4-D doubles the chance…
  • Shelley on a roll

    14 May 2012 | 8:52 pm
Councillor Shelley  Carroll tweeted a bunch of quotes from her day today including presentations from MGM Grand casino reps trying to set up shop in Toronto (with much support from Fordo and his bunch), and witticisms from Giorgio Mammoliti’s. These would be hilarious if they didn’t represent the idiocy currently running, sorry, attempting to run Toronto. MGMGrand representatives: “We function best in an adult oriented town.” Still listening to deps about Casinos. In 8 yrs, I’ve never seen so many Public Affairs firms represented in this room @ 1 time. And…
  • RCMP G20 report, let the bullshit begin

    Patrick
    14 May 2012 | 6:37 pm
Hard to know where to begin on the recent report by the RCMP exonerating itself (surprise surprise) of any wrongdoing during the G20 summit here in Toronto. How about responsibility, for starters. Well, you all remember the infamous kettling incident where the police just rounded up everyone walking through the street, encircled them, and kept them standing in the rain for hours? Who was responsible for that again? Bill Blair said, yeah, the Toronto Police gave the orders: “I do acknowledge the operational command decisions were being made by a Toronto police superintendant who was the…
